Nonprofits make new year push for tax credit donations
TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Hundreds of Arizona’s qualifying charitable organizations are counting on donations for 2024.
The list ranges from educational non-profit organizations to helping people avoid evictions, as well as helping those who need nutritional assistance while staying at home.
Mobile Meals of Southern Arizona performs meal prep on a massive scale.
“We provide fresh, local meals,” explained L’Don Sawyer, CEO of Mobile Meals of Southern Arizona.
The non-profit relies on volunteers to deliver to people who cannot leave home and who have specific dietary needs, from diabetes to being recently released from the hospital.
“We may serve those folks for a month; they may stay on for a longer length of time but we help with both long-term and short-term needs,” Sawyer explained.
They usually serve about 120 clients daily but have as many as 200, and with their own kitchen, they crank out 300-350 meals a day with a goal of 400. Donations help handle costs.
“We rely on it very much so. We could not operate without these individual donations,” Sawyer said.
The end of the year brings more awareness about that need. There are hundreds of qualifying charitable organizations in Arizona, from education to social assistance, and it’s a tax credit which means donors will get it back at tax time. For 2024, there is a $470 limit for single people or married but filing separately and $938 for married filing jointly.
“Like every non-profit here in Tucson, we rely considerably on this time of year to do our fundraising to raise dollars to operate throughout the year,” Sawyer said.
You have until April 15 to make a donation that counts on your taxes for this year. Just don’t forget. And if you can’t spare the money, you have another resource that’s appreciated — your time.
“We need volunteers to serve as drivers and to get the meals out to our clients, to check on them, to be that human contact but we also need volunteers to help us in the office,” Sawyer said.
The limits are higher in 2025 but they will need to be claimed on taxes filed in 2026.
