Feed the Need and Neighbors Together provide holiday cheer with meals, gifts, and coats

Two local nonprofits united Saturday to deliver meals, gifts, and supplies to neighbors in need in North Charleston.

Nonprofit Feed The Need Charleston is focused on addressing food insecurity in the area, while partner organization Neighbors Together is dedicated to supporting the community through resources and relationships.

“As a community, when we can come together, we can help those that can’t,” founder of Feed the Need Charleston Mickey Bakst told News 4.

On Saturday, 1,000 people were given winter coats, groceries for Christmas dinner, toys, gifts, and gift cards in North Charleston, near the intersection of Rivers Avenue and Cosgrove Avenue.

“This area economically is one of the poorest communities in the region,” Bakst said. “For us to be able to serve the neighbors in this community and create a wonderful meal as well as create a great Christmas experience is extremely important. People here need our help and need the help of the community.”

The hot meals, provided by Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint, were also an effort to support the community during the holiday season. Chase Barton, owner of Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint, told said that during the holidays most people want to gather with family and friends and share a warm meal. He said the event was “a great way for us to come out and interact with our community, meet new people, serve a need, and help a really great cause.”

Other community partners provided medical support and gave out pet food and supplies. The two non-profits have been serving the community for over 40 years, working to alleviate hunger and homelessness in local neighborhoods. They said this annual event is their way of trying to give everybody what they need to have a wonderful Christmas.

Feed the Need is always looking for donations to help combat hunger and homelessness. You can also get involved with Neighbors Together for other community events throughout the year.
