Champion Autism Network raises money in Meatball competition

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – Champion Autism Network, or CAN, set out to raise money on Saturday to continue its mission.

The day was full of fun and competition, but the cause ran deeper.

It’s all to help an organization helping those with autism, starting with breaking stereotypes.

“The public at large who doesn’t know might think it’s an evil child or horrible parents when in reality it’s a family that’s in crisis,” CAN Executive Director, Becky Large said.

Many folks feel the effects of increased cost of living and non-profits aren’t exempt.

“That has trickled down to non-profits like us. Champion autism network. So you know, the budgetary deficits are a real concern,” Large said.

The organization provides sensory-friendly opportunities for those with different abilities, like autism

It’s A mission fundraisers like this will help continue.

“It will allow us to continue our mission on providing a safe, sensitive environment for our people with autism and of course their families. Plus economic impact for those who serve them,” she said.

Saturday’s event featured a meatball cookoff.

The best part?

“I’m getting a bunch of free meatballs in the meatball eating contest,” Justin McGraw said.

A contest in which the winner, Casey Vredenburg, ate 25 meatballs.

WMBF News caught up with him after the competition.

“I’m feeling hungry still. I could do another heat,” Vredenburg said.

He said it’s about preparation and knowing it’s all for a good cause.

“I just came in hungry. I love those dagwood’s meatballs and we’re out here for a good cause, so it was all fun,” he said.

The atmosphere also attracted McGraw.

“I found out about a couple of businesses, got to hang out with my buddies, so it’s good,” McGraw said.

It’s an atmosphere of inclusivity, all supporting a great mission.

“They want support, they want love. And that’s what we’re here to do. We’re here to love on them and tell people how they can do that easily,” Large said.

Vredenburg won the 2024 competition and ate a total of 25 meatballs.
