Recreation Makes a Racket in Talkeetna

More recreation opportunities may be on the way to Talkeetna. The Paddle and Racket Committee is working to bring tennis, pickleball, and ping-pong to the area.

Committee Chair Brad Hughes says they are still in the early planning phase. He says there are lots of trails for skiing and hiking and singular activities. The goal for the new recreation space is to bring the community together to play. Paddle and racket sports are social and cross different demographics and age groups.

Keeping costs low is a priority. The group did receive a small grant for $1200 from the U.S. Tennis Association that could pay for nets or other small items. The grant is strictly to further tennis in underserved communities. The Committee has not yet explored other funding options as they are just getting started.

The initial proposed location for the courts was behind the library and that’s still on the table. But the Committee also is evaluating an alternate location that might be suitable, which will be presented at the next Talkeetna Community Council meeting on November 4th at 7pm at the Talkeetna Library.
