Empty Bowls Wichita hosts artistic chili cook-off fundraiser
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Students and staff at Wichita State University teamed up with the community to put on a delicious and creative event that has been helping combat hunger in Wichita since 2014.
Empty Bowls Wichita held its 10th annual chili cookoff fundraiser at Woosley Hall Saturday. Attendees tried different chili recipes after purchasing a handmade bowl for samples. The bowls are created by community members, local artists, WSU students and even some elementary students.
The event aims to raise $20,000 for local non-profits HumanKind and the ICT Fridge Project. HumanKind said every bowl Empty Bowls sells at the event equals 35 meals for people in need.
Empty Bowls Executive Director Brenda Lichman said the event has also made a difference in the lives of some of the volunteers who help out.
“Some of the students have struggled with food insecurity, and they have said that straight to us, like, ‘I used to get food assistance, and now I get a chance to give back,’ so I think it’s empowering to be able to be a part of the community to make that difference,” said Lichman.
